According to a recent survey, requests for re-mortgaging advice are reaching an unprecedented level as home owners hit by rising standard variable rates look for better deals.

Recent reports suggest that nearly 40% of the requests for mortgage advice in March 2012 were for properties that are being re-mortgaged. This compares to just over 30% for the same time last year. The trend reflects concerns over the introduction of much tighter lending criteria with many home owners trying to switch to better rates before it becomes more difficult to change deals.

The Financial Services Consumer Panel has warned that it could be more difficult for anyone re-mortgaging once new FSA rules are in place. The new rules are expected to affect over 11 million home owners with interest only mortgages and a million more affected by recent increases in lenders standard variable rates.
